Prime Minister Kishida, about visiting Ukraine

Prime Minister Kishida, about visiting Ukraine

Hello, this time, I would like to summarize the background, significance, and reactions for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visiting Ukraine from March 21 to 22.

First, why was Kishida's visit to Ukraine held? There are three main reasons.

1. To strengthen cooperation with Ukraine and Japanese solidarity
2. To decide to refuse unilateral changes due to Russian invasion and power
3. To demonstrate the leadership of the G7 where Japan serves as the president

Ukraine has been invading the Russian army since February last year, and has been fighting. The Japanese government has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and has been imposing economic sanctions to Russia, as in other countries in the seven major countries (G7). However, Prime Minister Kishida had not visited Ukraine after the war, only one G7 leader. In this visit, we met with President Zelensky to pay tribute to the courage and patience of the Ukrainian people, and conveyed unwavering support as Japan and G7. In addition, discussions were held for the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May this year.

Prime Minister Kishida also turned flowers to a group burial site in Bucha, a suburbs near Keyu, discovered that many civilians had been killed after the Russian army was withdrawn. This is also a strong message for Russia. The Japanese government has once again confirmed its determination to protect international order based on the rule of law.

Prime Minister Kishida's visit to Ukraine was not announced in advance and was secretly held. This is considered necessary from the viewpoint of safety measures and crisis management. According to government officials, the Japanese government had prior notice to the Russian on the diplomatic route, but the detailed schedule and means of transportation were hidden.

It can be said that this visit was historic.
